Nothing captures our fascination quite like fortune-telling. Throughout history, man has invented countless ways of looking into the future – playing cards, tea leaves, astrology and crystal balls.

The fortune-teller in this painting is 80-year-old Maija, who was a master at revealing the secrets of the palm. Here, we see her clutching a knitting needle, tracing the fate line of a young woman. As the future is revealed, the girl silently blushes with excitement while the others giggle and whisper – only until it is their turn.  [NEXT PAGE]
