Gradually an Ocotober Group emerged as an heir to the November Group. The basis of the group was in the 'salon des refuses' of 1934, which was organized in opposition to the exhibition with which the Academy of Fine Arts (formerly the Art Society) unsuccessfully attempted to revitalize Finnish art. The motto of the October group was 'in defence of modernism, against isolationist nationalism'. At the same time the members emphatically dissociated themselves with political commitment and the language question; everything was to be based on pure art. The painters Ernst Krohn ( The Schoolgirl 1934), Sven Grönvall and Eemu Myntti and the sculptors Carl Wilhelms and Sakari Tohka were founding members of the group.
The October Group was a vehement declaration of freedom, but its
battle ground was the depression and all the ensuing difficulties.
Novemberist fury was impossible in the gloomy economic circumstances
of the 30's. The Winter War suspended the group's development for years.
