Eemu Myntti's (1890-1943) art was an indication of the continuing power of Expressionism in the early 20's. Myntti's Expressionism had a strong structural basis, but everything was enveloped in bright light and glowing colours: - the artists must seize an atmosphere and tear it away from other atmospheres' strengthening and developing it until it pulses like a heart.
Myntti was ready to explain the purpose of every brushstroke in his
paintings if need be, only that the world was not ready to accept all
the thoughts going round in his head:
It is sad that I can never be my own self. If I paint something,
I am labelled a madman - why? I can find no explanation apart from
the fact that my compositions lack that certain percentage of dullness
generally required. May God give us hysteria and strength that derives
from it, for peace and contentment are the death of everything living.
This is my testament.
