Yrjö Saarinen's
(1899-1958) art also followed its own
defiantly lonely course, unconcerned by what the mainstreams of art
favoured or avoided. Neither was he really aware of them. Yrjö Saarinen
had never attended art schools, had never been abroad. He possesed no
books on art and belonged to no art grouping. He was not interested by the
doings of other people and a sign painter's trade guaranteed him some
kind of a livelihood.
