Gradually Lampi's defiance subsided and died away. It was replaced by intimate and delicate pictures of his home environment. The Roof of the Sauna (1933) and The Weeping Willow (1934) were visible to his studio, which was built in an outbuilding's loft. The series of self-portraits reflects Lampi's spiritual development from the defiant 'king of the plains' all the way to the despondent artist that he became: The melancholy of nature is nothing but nature's greatness and power.
