Väinö Kunnas

Harmaa tanssi

Kunnas's Dance series, however, is very different in spirit to this Neue Sachlichkeit Realism. Each of the dance paintings is in a single colour that corresponds to the mood of the dance. The Grey Dance (1928) is lyrical and lingering, moody and dreamlike, the red one is passionate, the yellow tense, the black elegant and the multi-coloured dance is full of vivacity.

Väinö Kunnas, who was extremely sensitive to the spirit of the age, might well have developed his art towards Futurism, which at the time was still unknown in Finland. But yet again a vigorously begun career was terminated by untimely death. [NEXT PAGE]
