The influences that Edwin Lydén received in the artist circles of Munich were handed down to the younger members of his own circle, particularly to Otto Mäkilä (1904-1955). Mäkilä had shown from his school days a desire to establish international connections, to broaden his outlook and to find new possibilities. A study trip to Paris brought Mäkilä into the middle of vigorous Surrealist activity: André Breton published his second Surrealist manifesto, Salvador Dali, Max Ernst and René Magritte held exhibitions, displaying visions arising from dreams and the subconscious.
After my first trip to Paris I didn't paint for a long time: I struggled with problems of finding my own self. My painting and my approach changed after I saw works by modern artists - I could no longer return to pastoral idylls. Before visiting Paris I painted from a model and I was content with character and natural appearance, but now I use the model only as a starting point and I paint according to my inner vision.
