Wäinö Aaltonen was a master of granite and marble. Nude Boy (1917) is a descendant of Egyptian sculpture, an archaizing work that emphasizes the heaviness of stone. In his granite works Aaltonen brought a decisive contribution to Finnish sculpture: he drew attention to this stone of the Finnish bedrock as a valuable sculptural material that is the closest possible raw material for Finns besides wood.
