The Biedermeier Era

Bourgeois geniality, a slight and sometimes even pronounced sweetness, precise and detailed excecution - all these attributes are connected with the Biedermeier style. Finnish Biedermeier can add to the list genuine naiveness and a realistic undertone.

In Finland the arrival of the Biedermeier style complemented the established artistic idioms with free painting that was independent of the client. Landscapes, scenes from literature, ordinary life and history were now painted. Art was valued for itself more than previously and in the background loomed larger than ever the goals of national awakening.  [NEXT PAGE]
