Magnus returned to Finland in the autumn of 1829. The return meant an end to the illustrating work since there was still no demand for it in Finland. Magnus's occupations ranged from cartography to taxidermy, from calligraphy and heraldic painting to teaching drawing. It wasn't until the last ten years of his life that Magnus had faith in making a living solely by his art.
Having left Sweden
Magnus von Wright
settled in Helsinki
and the town became a new theme in his art. The slumbering tranquillity
of a small town such as Helsinki was well suited to the artist's quietly
meditative temperament. In Magnus the unhurried life of this wooden
town had its first portrayer; thus were created the first known
townscapes in Finnish art.
