Magnus von Wright

Annankatu kylmänä talviaamuna

Magnus's home was on Annankatu, in the very centre of present-day Helsinki. Again and again Magnus transferred the views seen from the yard and the windows of his house onto canvas or paper.

Annankatu on a Cold Winter Morning (1868) is one of the last paintings that Magnus von Wright finished; it is full of the unshakable peace and quiet of a small town, a tranquillity that freezes the clouds in the sky.

Throughout his life Magnus von Wright suffered from a feeling that his irregular art studies had been insufficient. On his first and only study trip to Düsseldorf he wrote home in a downcast tone: I feel deep sorrow at the fact that I did not have a chance to develop my artistic gifts earlier - I too could then have become a painter.
