Ferdinand von Wright

Ensi yllätys

Ferdinand was a recluse, he withdrew almost completely into the solitude of Haminanlahti. But even a life shared with the numerous brothers and sisters and other relatives seemed too restless at times. And so Ferdinand built a house of his own a stone's throw from his old home and gave it the characteristic name Lugnet, Peace. Accompanied by geese and pet doves Ferdinand painted pictures of the environment that he knew best. At times he compensated his lack of human relationships by transferring human events into the animal world. The Surprise (1880) is a pictorial fable typical of Ferdinand, in which a new-born calf amazes a flock of geese by its sudden appearance. [NEXT PAGE]
