Jansson's contemporaries regretted that the artist, who died at the age of 27, completed only a few large compositions. And it is true that in one of the few finished paintings A Smiling Old Woman (1867) Jansson has created a splendid picture of a peasant woman from Åland, a bright work painted in light colours. Or in his painting Åland Sailors Playing Cards (1871) he has succeeded remarkably in conveying the excitement the game has caused in the players.
