The medieval stone church of Finström, the artist's native region, continued always to fascinate Jansson. At the Vestry Door (1874) is one of the artist's last paintings, a skilful picture of the dark sacristy and the lightfilled nave; it can be regarded as a spiritual self-portrait of the artist: a lonely figure withdrawing into the shadows of doorway to a spacious and brightly lit room.
