Karl Emanuel Jansson

Valkoinen uuni

But also the numerous sketches of interiors from Jansson's home district and of the cottage interiors of Häme constitute a remarkable passage in the history of Finnish genre painting that is unsurpassed for its freshness.

Karl Emanuel Jansson was an example or the early activity of the Finnish Art Society and the unforseen difficulties caused by the society's promotion of impecunious talents. The society's funds were small, its grants came irregularly and they guaranteed the artist an extremely meagre livelihood. Jansson's own colleagues accused the Art Society of forcing the artist into such financial straits that injury to his health had become difficult to avoid. The artistic talent spotters had also failed to take sufficiently into consideration how difficult it was for a peasant's son to become an artist working and acting on the terms of the upper class. This sudden elevation to another social rank had estranged Jansson from his native environment and made him an outsider in his new surroundings.
