Adolf von Becker

Äidiniloa

Paris was the school of Finnish Realists and plein air painters. They however held as their ideal and example not the most radical and daring French art, but admired rather Jules Bastien-Lepage and Jules Breton

The first Finn to opt for Paris was Adolf von Becker (1831-1901) who left Düsseldorf, fed up with the city where everybody theorized, drank beer and painted everything with the same colour.

Becker's art was filled with little incidents of ordinary life, with day-to-day reality. In his painting Maternal Joy (1868) Becker breaks away from the Romantic idealisation of the family and approaches Realism. The picture shows an incident from French everyday life: a proud, but heedful, French mother watching a little boy drinking milk. The old preoccupation with ethnological accuracy is still there: the pattern on the china jug and the shine of the scissors have been painted with great care and precision. A picture of the Emperor and Empress on the wall connects the incident with its time and culture.

Unlike the art of many other artists of his time, Adolf von Becker's Realism never shifted towards National Romanticism. Becker had moved to Paris, his place of study, just as the new Romantic movement was gaining ground. [NEXT PAGE]
