From the 1880s onwards Edelfelt was favoured as a portraitist by Parisians. The portrait of Louis Pasteur had been a great success in the Salon of 1880; the door was now open for Edelfelt to an international career as portrait painter.
A Child's Funeral, which had hung in the Paris Salon, had drawn
Pasteur's attention to the young Finnish artist and he agreed to sit
for him. At the time Pasteur was conducting rabies experiments and the
painting was excecuted in the laboratory of the Pasteur Institute.
Edelfelt was so excited about his sitter that he 'knew nothing so
interesting as rabies and Pasteur's rabbits'. The final version of the
portrait belongs to the French State, the Art Museum of the Ateneum
possesses a carefully finished study (1885).
