When Aukusti Uotila (1858-1886), a peasant's son from Häme, first came to Paris, he was immediately enraptured by the art of the Fontainebleu and Barbizon schools. Shepherdess and Sheep (1879) was an outcome of this trip. On his next visit to Paris Uotila noticed that the course of art was now turning to Brittany. The world of the coastal fishermen was well suited to Uotila's meditative and tranquil artistic temperament. Being himself of peasant origin, Uotila felt an affinity to the bare life and quiet drudgery of the fishermen.
Uotila was forced to discontinue his studies for lack of funds;
ill health prevented him from working at full capacity. In the end
Uotila became embittered by Finland's artistic ambience in which he
could not find his place.
