Akseli Gallen-Kallela was an indefatigable searcher. Through all
his life he sought a purer, more genuine, more real life. Not life as it
existed, but life as he imagined it might be. For Gallen-Kallela
the genuine and the real, the pure and the unadultarated was to be
found amid the Finnish people, in the deep backwoods, where
civilization had not yet corrupted honesty and the quality of life:
An untouched wooded wilderness. A forest lake edged with white
moss and marsh tea. On the shore of the lake my little camp with a
log fire. A peregrine falcon cries in the pale evening air, and a withered
pinetree in front of me drops its needles one by one among the undergrowth.
