At the age of nineteen Gallen-Kallela spent a vacation in his childhood environment at Tyrvää. There he painted his early masterpiece Boy and Crow (1884), a work that showed a clear tendency away from idealized description of the people towards immediate reality and seizing the moment. The composition is bold; The little shabby boy is set against a background of infinite well-trodden lawn. The sky is missing altogether, the horizon has risen beyond the picture plane.
The Boy and the Crow was the first large-scale work of the young
artist. At the time Gallen-Kallela's choice of subjects indicated that
he was pursuing themes that were as far removed as possible from
earlier Finnish portrayals of common life.
