Throughout his life Gallen-Kallela maintained a passionate interest fo Finnish mythology, the Kalevala and the Kanteletar. during almost fifty years he returned again and again to this subject, finding in the end to his disappointment that he was unable to complete the work.
The first of the Kalevala stories to receive a pictorial
representation from the artist was the
Aino Myth
(1891). Gallen-Kallela wanted to accomodate in one
composition the whole of this sad tale: the encounter of Väinämöinen
and Aino in the forest, Väinämöinen's proposal and the mournful Aino
weeping on the shore and listening to the call of the maids of Vellamo
who are playing in the water. In the right-hand panel Aino has made
her decision to choose death rather than the obnoxious suitor. The
artist has aimed at creating a whole that represents Finnish nature,
mythology and popular culture right down to the Karelian-style picture
frame.
