In The Fratricide (1897) Akseli Gallen-Kallela has simplified his imagery even further. The Kanteletar ballad telling the story of a youth who has killed his brother is also an image of a mother-and-son relationship, of the mother's grief and uncertainty. Gallen-Kallela entered into the ancient ballad by listening over and over again a simple tune played by his wife. I have begun a little picture that is a simple and straightforward as a folk song . . . The colours are deep red, black, greenish yellow and grey, with a couple of patches of virulent green and flame yellow as a finale. The whole is like music in colours, in a minor key, where these two patches are like broken strings, desperate cries of pity.
The roughness of the tow cloth, the decorative garlands of
the background, the simplicity of the palette and the dullness of
the colours, owing to the use of tempera, link the painting with
the world of old Finnish folk textiles.
