Halonen transferred the unhurried atmosphere of his landscapes to
his figure compositions, emphasizing their monumentality.
Pioneers
in Karelia
(1900) was in the eyes of contemporaries an irrealistic
picture that had little to do with real work. They expressed amazement
at the appearance of a boat in the middle of a forest, at the clean
white clothes of the workers and that there were so few wood shavings
on the ground. But it was not Pekka Halonen's intention to create a
picture of drudgery, but of the calmness and placidity in a peasant's
way of working.
