Helene Schjerfbeck painted The Little Convalescent (1888) during a long stay in St. Ives in Cornwall. She never mentioned who the girl in the picture was, but she must have had a sitter, for she wouldn't even consider painting a human figure without a live model. A sick child was a typical subject of the '80s, but with Schjerfbeck it remained throughout her life. Again and again she returned to the same theme, refining details, removing everything unessential, until she was left with the little girl's face, glowing with fever, and the hand that clutches a sprouting twig. Nine times during sixty years Helene Schjerfbeck worked on the Convalescent theme to refine it to a more simplified form.
The Little Convalescent has been the subject of many conjectures.
Will the girl recover? Is the sprig really a symbol of new life? It has also
been seen as an allegorical self-portrait, a mirror of the ailing artist's
inmost feelings.
