Gradually her portrait commissions grew to such numbers that she became worried about neglecting other subjects. The trip to St. Ives was a conscious break with the daily routine of portrait painting, an endeavour to seek free subjects. Out Into the World (1889) is the chief work of this phase, a quietly narrative genre picture, typical of Maria Wiik, that depicts a grandmother's wistful longing at the departure of a girl who is leaving home to carn her living.
Although Maria Wiik's art was deeply rooted in the Realism of the
'80s, the chiaroscuro covering the precise forms of the painting is a
sign of more internal qualities, a shift towards the emotionally inclined
style of the '90s.
