The same summer that Rissanen painted The Blind Old Woman he made another of his masterpieces, The Fortuneteller (1899). This theme had long occupied the artist's mind, ever since he had watched fortune-tellers at work at a fair on Kuopio market place where he was selling dream books as a little boy. Savonkylä had its own fortune-teller. The 80-year old Maija Hara was a locally well-known soothsayer and healer. Again Rissanen wanted to depict the people as large as possible, close to the viewer. The picture plane is completely filled with people, some of whom are only partly included.
Maija Hara examines the hand of a young girl. As she follows the
lines with a knitting needle some homeless residents, servants and
dependent lodgers of the Taskila house and some girls from the village
watch her intently. The excitement of the event and the soon to be
revealed fortune was for Rissanen the picture's most important
element.
