At the Pillory
(1900) was also based on one
of Rissanen's childhood recollections. Originally this portrayal of a
man suffering a dishonouring punishment was more extensive. In the
right half of the picture Rissanen had placed a jeering and mocking
crowd, and on the left a little girl who pityingly hands a coin to the
punished. It was customary to occasionally give persons under such
punishment coins to pay for their sauna bath after the chastisement.
But Rissanen was not satisfied with the whole. He cut away the left
and right sides, leaving only the central figure, the punished youth.
After closer examination one notices that even this fragment is
assembled by glueing together several parts.
