The Awakening (1894) is one of Enckell's strongest works in terms of draughtsmanship and in asceticism of colour represents an extreme in the artist's production. The work is a symbolic representation of the whole of man's existence. In the colouring Enckell has not aimed at naturalism, but at a harmony of opposites. The block of colour covering the right edge of the painting creates the impression of an unreal stage.
The awakening youth experiences something momentous, he senses the
existence of the realm of ideas behind everyday reality. One can also
attribute to the painting a mysticist Swedenborgian idea of Adam
awakening into the highest level of consciousness.
