Boy with Skull (1893) is the most directly Symbolist of Enckell's works depicting young boys. Originally Enckell had included two naked boys of which the smaller, now painted over, lay on his stomach behind the skull, staring at it intently. We are left in the picture with a boy who sits in a bare landscape and studies a skull which he holds in his hands. The painting is concerned with the age-old idea of man confronting the problem of eternity.
