Ville Vallgren
(1855-1940) was the first
'Parisian master' of Finnish sculpture. He lived and worked in
the city for thirty-six years. In Paris Vallgren participated in
Symbolist exhibitions in the Salon de la Rose + Croix. The art that
the salon advocated renounced the historical, heroic and patriotic
subjects of academic art and denied portrayals of everyday reality,
setting as the goal of all art beauty, poetry and nobleness of spirit.
