Vallgren's attitude to art was characterized by deep feeling. Art
was to issue straight from the heart and the soul.
The goal of
art must be set very high; one must create works that have an effect
equalling he noblest religion.
Only art could help people
forget day-to-day drudgery and the ambiguity of life. And so, when
Vallgren embarked on his
Echo
(1887) he chose as
his model a 14-year old Italian boy 'who had a face of supermundane
beauty'.
