Lachrymal vases and funeral urns, then highly popular statuettes
that were placed on graves to commemorate the deceased, lent
themselves well to the worship of sentimental beauty. Their central
themes were grief and consolation. In the spirit of art nouveau the
human figures of Vallgren's lachrymal vases grew into one with nature,
becoming entwined with the stems of lilies and the flowers of the
poppy and drawing their strength from the same roots.
