Simberg's art had two leading characters, two figures that
repeatedly appeared in his pictures: the Poor Devil and Death. Both of
these seemingly frightening figures are in fact very close to being
human. The Poor Devil potters around like a brownie, now seeing to the
burning porridge and now to the playing children.
