Having once received a bad review for his works Simberg wrote to his brother in words that reveal a great deal about the aims of his art: B. criticized my techique. But at the same time he failed to notice all that was naive, childishly pure, and most importantly: the devotion and love that an artist puts into his work. Every work of art must contain this love and one understands the work if it is there. Only love produces worthy and genuine works of art. If love is missing when the labour pains begin the child will be unhappy. . . This explains to you why I say that there is so very little good art in the finest sense of the word. Ever since artists have tried to reach technical perfection their souls have become withered. Great care should be taken that the body and the soul develop hand in hand. But has this ever been achieved!
