Alfred William Finch
(1854-1930), a half Belgian
half English painter, printmaker and potter, was just the man cut out
for transmitting European currents to Finland. A.W. Finch was a
friend of the leading Neo-Impressionist painters Paul Signac and
George Seurat. He was also a member of the Belgian opposition group
Les Vingt which had struggled against Belgian nationalistic and
narrow-minded art. His contacts with Signac and Seurat drew Finch
to Neo-Impressionism; he painted his first pointillist painting
The Race Course at Ostende
in 1888.
