Martin Mijtens, the Elder

Henrik Georg Falkenberg af Bålby

Mijtens often framed the half-lengths, like the one of Vice President Falkenberg, in painted oval-shaped medallions. In this reserved portrait of an aristocrat, Mijtens went into a detailed portrayal of the face. The result is quite a profound characterization of a high-ranking judge when Sweden was a great power.

Henrik Georg Falkenberg was a wealthy landowner. He lived on his ancestral estate in Bålby where there is another version of the painting with its pendant, the portrait of Henrik Georg's spouse Kristina Natt och Dag. Henrik Georg Falkenberg served his country as Vice President of the Court of Appeal of Göta and as Governor of Älvsborg province.

Paul Sinebrychoff also bought the portrait of Henrik Georg's son, Colonel Henrik Falkenberg, on the same occasion at the Bukowski Christmas auction in 1900.
