Finnish National Gallery Library

The Finnish National Gallery Library is a specialised facility designed to support research on the National Gallery’s collections and Finnish art history in general. It also provides assistance in organising exhibitions. The library contains over 50 000 titles, the bulk of them being exhibition and museum catalogues. A library exchange programme, acquisitions and donations are the main sources of new material for the library.

The library is based at three locations. The unit in the Ateneum building specialises in Finnish art history, the Kiasma research library in Finnish and international contemporary art from the 1960s onwards, and the unit at the Sinebrychoff Art Museum in old foreign art. The library does not actively collect material on applied arts, architecture and old non-European art.

Visits to the Kiasma research library and the Sinebrychoff library are by appointment only. Visitors to the Ateneum library are also advised to check in advance to ensure that the required material is available. Material is not loaned out, but researchers are welcome to consult literature in the Reading Room. A fee is charged for taking photocopies. On special request, the library staff will search available databases on behalf of the customer, for which a fee is charged. The library regrets that it cannot provide assistance in the valuation and identification of works of art.
